I woke up this morning to hear something on NPR I didn't expect to hear. Last night, American speed skater Joey Cheek won the gold medal in the 500 meter race. In the press conference after he announced that he was going to donate the 25,000 dollars he will get for winning to an organization called Right to Play started by Norwegian speed skater Johann Koss to direct high profile athletes to need around the world. he also asked for other Olympic sponsors to match his donations and so far Nike, Inc has responded.
I was stunned that I actually heard this on the radio. Since there is very little covered by the national media about what actually happening in Darfur. Our administration keeps telling us that we are out to "free oppressed people"in Iraq. Well, It doesn't get any worse in Darfur. So if we want to be the great humanitarians that we say we are. Shouldn't our government step in over there? Stop the violence and genocide?
In a way, I think that Joey's decision should inspire us. Why not start a "Bloggers for Darfur"? Like they did for Hurricane Katrina. Place a graphic button on you site raising awareness and asking for donations and sending them off to Right to Play. Any one want to give me a hand?
