Katrina's Wake

City of New Orleans ordered to evacuate. This has not happened since the evacuation of Atlanta, GA and Richmond, VA during the civil war. (From Yahoo):

NEW ORLEANS - The governor of Louisiana says everyone needs to leave New Orleans due to flooding from Hurricane Katrina. "We've sent buses in. We will be either loading them by boat, helicopter, anything that is necessary," Gov. Kathleen Blanco said. Army engineers struggled without success to plug New Orleans' breached levees with giant sandbags, and the governor said Wednesday the situation was worsening and there was no choice but to abandon the flooded city.

HOW YOU CAN HELP (via MSNBC.com):

As the Gulf Coast begins to dig out in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, emergency organizations are executing cleanup and rescue plans, seeking donations and setting up outlets to provide information on the storm and its victims.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is taking the lead role in coordinating relief efforts. The agency is posting information about the storm on its Web site at www.fema.gov.

State responses are being coordinated by the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness; the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (site down as of Tuesday morning). The Louisiana Governor's Office and the City of New Orleans also posted emergency information on Katrina on their Web sites.

The relief effort is still being hampered by flooding in some areas. Up-to-date information can be found at these Web sites: The National Weather Service and the Hydrologic Information Center (river flooding only).

The American Red Cross opened a telephone hotline on Sunday to receive for donations from citizens. The number is 1-800-435-7669. Other information on Red Cross emergency programs is available at the Red Cross Web site. And Red Cross shelter information for Louisiana is available by calling 1-800-469-4828.

Other relief organizations soliciting donations included:

  • Episcopal Relief & Development
  • United Methodist Committee on Relief
  • Salvation Army
  • Catholic Charities
  • National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster
  • Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

The Salvation Army's Team Emergency Radio Network was taking requests for information on the welfare and status of loved ones in the hurricane area at its Web site.

As of 9 a.m. ET, the Federal Aviation Administration reported that airports had been closed in New Orleans; Baton Rouge; Mobile, Ala.; Gulfport-Biloxi, Miss.; and Pensacola, Fla. Major delays were expected at other airports in the Southeast and the domino effect from them could spread all the way across the country. Further information was available at www.faa.gov.

    Hurricane party

Chorus: Hurricane Party got out of control
I'm lying in the gutter eating tootsie rolls
With red-ant bites all over my ass
beating on my buddies with a baseball bat

Had a little party, me and my friends
A hurricane was coming to new orleans again
Somebody brought scotch, somebody brought beer
Shoulda’ kept the hooch and thrown ‘em out of here
    A friendly game, a penny a hand
Smoke a cigar, act like a man
Waiting for the gale force wind to blow
Shuffle up the cards and let the liquor flow

    Chorus

Somebody’s girlfriend showed up by surprise
with cookies in her hand and dollar signs in her eyes
I started dipping her cookies in scotch
She one all my money and a pocket watch
I passed out and I woke up
the house was empty so was my cup
Out on the front lawn I heard ‘em shout
I wish they’d come in so I could throw ‘em out

    Chorus

Everybody’s wrestling, out in the dirt
I laughed so hard until my stomach hurt
They saw me clean , they heard me laugh
They started charging at me so I grabbed the bat
--- Hurricane Party By Cowboy Mouth Who will be here this thursday at Dancin in the District.

Latest report say the Superdome has roof damage, a building collapsed and a leveee broke.

    I wish everyone there well.

    No No Noo ....

    From Pacific Views:

The LA Times reports on a lawsuit against the University of California, which wants the court to order UC to give admission credit for high school science courses the embrace the creationist worldview. The suit was filed by the Association of Christian Schools International, which claims that the university's year-old policy of denying credit for classes that use textbooks that challenge the reality of evolution discriminates against 'Christian' schools and attempts to secularize the schools. The suit specifically objects to UC's refusal to accept courses that use science books pubished by Bob Jones University Press and A Beka Books.

The Questionable Authority went looking to see just what was in some of these books, and found some interesting stuff in this 10th-grade biology text:

Biology for Christian Schools is a textbook for Bible-believing high-school students. Those who do not believe that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God will find many points in this book puzzling. This book was not written for them....

The people who prepared this book have tried consistently to put the Word of God first and science second...If...at any point God's Word is not put first, the authors apologize....

The same encyclopedia article may state that the grasshopper evolved 300 million years ago. You may find a description of some insect that the grasshopper supposedly evolved from and a description of the insects that scientists say evolved from the grasshopper. You may even find a "scientific" explanation of the biblical locust (grasshopper) plague in Egypt. These statements are conclusions based on "supposed science." If the conclusions contradict the Word of God, the conclusions are wrong, no matter how many scientific facts may appear to back them....

After Pasteur's swan-necked flask experiment and thousands of other experiments supporting biogenesis, do people today still believe in spontaneous generation? Yes. Anyone who believes in evolution believes that spontaneous generation has occurred. ... If they can create life, they think they can support their belief in life's beginning without God....

The idea that life comes from similar life is important. God created humans and all of the other kinds of organisms with the ability to reproduce after their own kind (Gen. 1:12, 21, 25, 28); therefore, humans reproduce humans, oak trees reproduce oak trees, and cats reproduce cats. The idea of all life forms descending from a common ancestor cell that originated from non-living chemicals is absurd.

And these all come from what's supposed to be a science text, not a religious tract.

We took a quick run through the catalog for the Bob Jones University Press and found these additional gems:

    • The description of a grade 7–12 book on the fossil record:
A discussion of the evidence from the fossil record, which supports the biblical view regarding the Flood and disproves the evolutionary view.
    • From the introduction to a text on space and earth science:
The answers to important questions such as those above can be found only in Scripture. It seems proper, then, that whenever you are faced with a question you should first find out what the Bible has to say about it. If the Bible speaks clearly onthe issue, then you have your answer. If it is silent, then you must use the reasoning ability that God has given you to find an answer that is consistent with what Scripture says.

It looks to us like UC has good reasons to be leery of courses that use texts that contain stuff like what we've just presented. And it looks to us that the ACSI's claim of religious discrimination is no more than a smokescreen for yet another attempt to to start easing the fundamentalist Christian worldview into all US schools, not just the 'Christian' ones.

We really need to fight this. Why do they want to take us back to the stone ages? Why don't we just use leaches to help with serious diseases or use drills to "let out the spirits" of seizure patinets? Come on people.
    Katrina -- Category 5

    8-28-05 Katrina Satellite Image
Hurricane Katrina, a category 5 hurricane , is expected to hit Louisiana some time tomorrow morning. She has an estimated 175mph sustained winds and gusts up to 212mph. A major mandatory evacuation has been issued including the City of New Orleans.

The bad thing about this storm is most of new Orleans is about 10 feet below sea level so any storm surge that hit will be devastating. They say that they only have levees to sustain 19 to 20 foot storm surge and Katrina has projected storm surge of about 25 feet. It going to hit at High Tide.

The projected track looks as if it may track up her to Nashville (see picture). MSNBC was saying that it will still be a Category 1 up past Jackson Mississippi. We here in Nashville will more than likely get a bunch of rain. We need it but probably not that much. Hopefully it will be a weak tropical storm by the time it gets here.

This hurricane is bad and will be devastating. I will keep and eye out for any blog coverage of the storm as it hits. I do wish the people in the path are heeding the warning and I wish all the people and their families the best.

    Cannery Row Revival

First of all I want to say, whoever decided to have the thing inside( sign said due to whether) was an idiot. It didn't rain and by tea end of tea night it was cooler outside. And what was up with doubling the price. The radio was advertising 5 bucks and when you got there it was 10, that not right.

Anyway I got there half way through Jeremy Lister's set. This guy id a lot of loud ass screaming. I was not too fond of his stuff. Maia Sharp's set was good. She is a very good song writer. Lighting 100 plays a lot of her stuff. She had singer Lauren Lucas as a back up singer. She was cute. I saw Maia a few years ago open or Jason White and Patty Griffin at Uptown mix. Good show.

About that time she ended her show all tea Big Head Todd and tea Monsters Fans where showing up and things where getting hot. That place was packed by time they started. What I heard of them was good. I like there music good enough but I had to leave about half way through due to the heat. I just couldn't take it anymore. I will see them next time they come to town.

OK here are some picture I took with my camera phone. Sorry. I couldn't get any closer for Big Head Todd.

I laughed so hard my stomach hurt...

My god was that movie(The Aristocrats) funny. This film breaks every obscene boundary known and unknown. I highly recommend this move unless you are easily offended.

The best was when Kevin Pollack told the Aristocrat's joke imitating Christopher Walken. Also Steven Banks (as Billy the Mime) told the joke, as a mime. Hearing Bob Saget tell his version that kept going on and on and on .. very very funny.

Anyway it on limited run at Green Hill. GO SEE IT. I laughed till I could not even see the screen anymore.
Letting the @#%&*& Obscenities Fly ....

I am just about to go see The Aristocrats at the Green Hill'sTheater. A movie By Penn Jillette (the talking half of Penn and Teller, who named his daughter Moxie Crimefighter Jillette) and Paul Provenza (who was Dr. Phillip Capra in Northern Exposure).

this is a move where they go around asking comedians to tell and about what's considered the dirtiest joke ever told (trailer here). Wann see just how dirty? Here is a link the South Park Version (QT) done by Matt stone and Trey parker. Warning: it is extremely, extremely obscene.

So just imagine, a version of this joke will be told by 101 comedians through out the movie. How awesome will that be?

I write about it again after I see it. Going to be at the 3:15 showing

    Interesting Idea...

The London Zoo has a Human exhibit (Via Yahoo):

London Zoo unveiled a new exhibition -- eight humans prowling around wearing little more than fig leaves to cover their modesty.

The "Human Zoo" is intended to show the basic nature of human beings as they frolick throughout the August bank holiday weekend.

"We have set up this exhibit to highlight the spread of man as a plague species and to communicate the importance of man's place in the planet's ecosystem," London Zoo said.

I figured it be a matter of time before something like this would be done.

I was flipping through the channels and came across this. Mr T preaching on the faith and values network with that shirt that says "Jesus died to save U".

I laughed myself right off the chair I was sitting in . I laughed almost as hard as seeing MC Hammer on there.

Ever Notice on the A-Team how they shot the crap out of everything and every time a jeep or building would blow up the people would climb out of it. No one ever died. Oh yea he was in DC Cab too.

What is Wrong with this guy?

The shit this man spews out of his mouth is incredible. First he prays for the death of the supreme court judges and now the assassination of the President of Venezuela. (from mediamatters.org video included):

Pat Robertson, host of Christian Broadcasting Network's The 700 Club and founder of the Christian Coalition of America, called for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

From the August 22 broadcast of The 700 Club:

ROBERTSON: There was a popular coup that overthrew him [Chavez]. And what did the United States State Department do about it? Virtually nothing. And as a result, within about 48 hours that coup was broken; Chavez was back in power, but we had a chance to move in. He has destroyed the Venezuelan economy, and he's going to make that a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism all over the continent.

You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war. And I don't think any oil shipments will stop. But this man is a terrific danger and the United ... This is in our sphere of influence, so we can't let this happen. We have the Monroe Doctrine, we have other doctrines that we have announced. And without question, this is a dangerous enemy to our south, controlling a huge pool of oil, that could hurt us very badly. We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with.

Hey Pat, why don't you reread your 10 commandments, since you want them placed everywhere for people to see and be reminded of them. THOU SHALL NOT KILL. Why not blame this on the feminist, atheist, and homosexuals like you did 9/11, you asshole.

Take a look and then decide weather you want you Senator supporting him or not. Be Informed.

    Senator Frist... A Doctor?

So Friday our own Senator Bill Frist said this about teaching "Intelligent Design" in our public schools:

"I think today a pluralistic society should have access to a broad range of fact, of science, including faith...I think in a pluralistic society that is the fairest way to go about education and training people for the future."

Faith in schools? First this is a breech of separation of church and state.Second there IS NO EVIDENCE SUPPORTING INTELLIGENT DESIGN. And he calls him self a Doctor. Are doctors not scientist by nature?

Here is what PZ Meyers at Pharyngula had to say:

What did we do to deserve these fools?

I don't even understand what he's babbling about in that first sentence—he's muddling together fact, science, and faith, and implying that faith is a subset of the first two. What does it mean to have a "wide range" of those things? Do facts have reasonable ranges, such that we can simultaneously argue that humans evolved, and humans were created? That science, the study of the observable, should encompass religion, the invention of the invisible?

The rest of his remarks are further inanities. Of course good teaching has to come down on the side of the best explanations. We can't expect a teacher to stand up before a class and abdicate his or her responsibility to think and evaluate, presenting a random assortment of ideas, some sensible, some lunatic, without criticism…and simultaneously expect the students to learn to use their minds. Teaching is not about being fair to ideas. Treating the best ideas, the best evidence, the best approximation to the truth as on a par with the insubstantial vapor coming from religiously motivated creationists is not the way to educate and train the next generation.

Damn these Republican incompetents. They are throwing away our future for their superstitions.

    Amen brother.

And if what Senator Frist is saying should be done why not also teach the following (Via the Onion):

As the debate over the teaching of evolution in public schools continues, a new controversy over the science curriculum arose Monday in this embattled Midwestern state. Scientists from the Evangelical Center For Faith-Based Reasoning are now asserting that the long-held "theory of gravity" is flawed, and they have responded to it with a new theory of Intelligent Falling.

"Things fall not because they are acted upon by some gravitational force, but because a higher intelligence, 'God' if you will, is pushing them down," said Gabriel Burdett, who holds degrees in education, applied Scripture, and physics from Oral Roberts University

Keller Williams at the Cannery Row Revival

Last night I went to the Mercy Lounge's Cannery Row Revival show. After going to the Boscos Cellerman Reunion party where they give away a trip to Denver fro the Great American Beer Festival to every one who won a chance to tap that cask ( I have won 3 times). I headed down to Market Street for a Pretty good Turkey Burger and a Yazoo Pale Ale. I made it to the Cannery Row thing as Mike Younger took the stage. He was ok, very songwriterish. After him Jeff Coffin, a wonderful saxophone player with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones came on with his band. They where awesome. Very easy listen to and groovy music. He is definitely worth checking out. And if you haven't Seen Bela Fleck, make sure you do. You wont regret it.

Then up came Keller Williams. This man is way too talented. He plays all the instruments and has a loop machine. Freaking awesome. I'm not sure how to explain what he did. I am not the musically inclined. But his recorded stuff does not in anyway represent his live stuff. Watching this guys was simply amazing. Next time he come near you go check him out. There were a few tapres at the show so maybe I can link to the recording of the show. It was a good one.

Ok here are some pictures of the show last night taken with my Camera Phone.

    Justice Sunday II Round up.

Ok so I didn't go or watch this Justice Sunday sequel (sequels usually suck anyway) . I didn't want to ruin my nice lazy calm Sunday. So here is what I found about it so far:

    From AMERICABlog:

Well, the theocrats had their meeting today. All the big names were there: Dobson, Perkins, DeLay, Zell Miller and Phyllis Schlafly. Doesn't that group just evoke the concept of justice?

This crowd wants Justices who will impose theocratic rule. They are going to do everything they can to succeed.

So it looks as if Christopher Walken is looking at running for president. How cool is that. He always plays a bad ass in every movie. Tell me that any terrorist of rogue leader of a country would think twice about messing with us after seeing this line for True Romance:

Coccotti: You know who I am, Mr. Worley?
Clifford Worley: I got no idea.
Coccotti: I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood. You tell the angels in heaven you never seen evil so singularly personified as you did in the face of the man who killed you. My name is Vincent cockatoo. I work as counsel for Mr. Blue Lou Boyle, the man your son stole from. I hear you were once a cop so I can assume you've heard of us before. Am I correct?
Clifford Worley: I heard of Blue Lou Boyle.
Coccotti: I'm glad. Hopefully it means we can cut out the part of the conversation where you're wondering how full of shit I am.

Or this line from True Romance:

Coccotti: I haven't killed anybody since 1984. Goddamn his soul to burn for eternity in fucking hell for making me get my hands dirty. Go over to this comedian's son's apartment, come back with something that tells me where that asshole went, so I can wipe this egg off my face and finish this fucked-up family for good.
Not to mention his other bad guy roles. Hmm .... He may be the answer to stopping terrorism. And what better of a campaign commercial than the Fat Boy Slim Video for Weapon of Choice? This look like it gonna be interesting.

    But still dude, it's scary.

Pictures from Last Nights Mercy Lounge Revival Show

Man it was a great show. I showed up just as Pale Blue Dot was finishing up. They kinda sucked. Anyway a guy named Eliot Morris came on, who was pretty good . Nice acoustic set. He is very much worth checking out. Glen Phillips was next. For some reason every time he comes to town either I am out of town or I get sick and not able to see him. I have and still am a big fan of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Glen's old band. His solo stuff has been great. He did one Toad song, "Walk on the Ocean", which is great song but I wish he had done more. He did his song Duck and Cover from his new album and said that Lightning 100 was one of 2 stations playing that song. That sucks because it's great song. He ended with Van Morrison's "Crazy Love" which you may have heard on Ray Charles' duets album. I believe it got some radio play. He a great artist and I recommend checking out his solo stuff especially if you are a Toad the Wet Sprocket fan.

I saw Marc Broussard 2 years ago at Dancin in the District. I remember him being good but nothing too striking. His show last night was incredible. Either I wasn't paying that much attention to him before or he as matured as a artist. His set was full of energy and very uplifting. Seem like most every band from Louisiana is like this (i.e. Cowboy Mouth and Better Than Ezra, playing later this year) If he come back to town make sure you see him.

Here some pictures I took with my cell phone camera (also posted on my Buzznet site).
