Rep. John Dingell's Jingle

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed a resolution (H. Res 579) that was for protecting the symbols and traditions of Christmas. The passed by a vote of 401-22-5-5 which doesn't surprise me, but what was awesome about this was what Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) read on the floor of the House:
'Twas the week before Christmas and all through the House,
no bills were passed `bout which Fox News could grouse.
Tax cuts for the wealthy were passed with great cheer,
so vacations in St. Barts soon should be near.

Katrina kids were all nestled snug in motel beds,
while visions of school and home danced in their heads.
In Iraq, our soldiers need supplies and a plan,
and nuclear weapons are being built in Iran.

Gas prices shot up, consumer confidence fell.
Americans feared we were in a fast track to ..... well.
Wait, we need a distraction, something divisive and wily,
a fabrication straight from the mouth of O'Reilly.

We will pretend Christmas is under attack,
hold a vote to save it, then pat ourselves on the back.
Silent Night, First Noel, Away in the Manger,
Wake up Congress, they're in no danger.

This time of year, we see Christmas everywhere we go,
From churches to homes to schools and, yes, even Costco.
What we have is an attempt to divide and destroy
when this is the season to unite us with joy.

At Christmastime, we're taught to unite.
We don't need a made-up reason to fight.
So on O'Reilly, on Hannity, on Coulter and those right-wing
blogs.
You should sit back and relax, have a few egg nogs.

'Tis the holiday season; enjoy it a pinch.
With all our real problems, do we really need another Grinch?
So to my friends and my colleagues, I say with delight,
a Merry Christmas to all, and to Bill O'Reilly, happy holidays.
Ho, ho, ho. Merry Christmas."

Finally someone has it right and wasn't afraid of saying it. There was also a amendment raised to add that the symbols of Chanukah be protected and the Republicans said no. I see how it is then. Only save that which is Christian. Piss on everyone else.

How sad is it that our Legislative body thinks this is a pressing issue and needs any attention at all?

Man How Cool Is this?

How long have I waited for this. I actually didn't think it was possible. Colored bubbles! not the rainbow looking ones we normally see. I tried this when I was younger (as I bet we all did) by adding food coloring and /or dye to my bubble liquid but with no success.

Tim Kehoe of St. Paul Minnesota spent 11 years and over a half million dollars to produce what you see in this picture. Do I hear a Nobel Prize in Chemistry nomination?

All I know is I'm getting drunk off my ass on New Years cause of all this bullshit I'm hearing. I think I deserve at least that.

Narnia and Christianity

C.S Lewis' The chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe opened last week. I have yet to see this movie but I have heard that it is very well done. I did read The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe when I was younger when my grandmother bought me the entire Chronicles for Christmas one year. I never did get to read the rest.

I came across and article by Polly Toynbee published in the UK's Guardian called "'Narnia represents everything that is most hateful about religion". I was unaware of the religious undertones when I read them 15 years ago. The basic story is about a Lion, named Aslan, that sacrifices himself and then comes back to life to save everyone. Hmm.. sounds familiar. Didn't Neo do that in The Matrix Movies?

Anyway here are a few excerpts from Polly Toynbee's Article that caught my eye:

Narnia is a strange blend of magic, myth and Christianity, some of it
brilliantly fantastical and richly imaginative, some (the clunking allegory)
toe-curlingly, cringingly awful.

(snip)

Disney is deliberately promoting this film to the religious - it has
appointed Outreach, an evangelical publisher, to promote the Christian message
behind the movie in British churches. The Christian radio station Premier is
urging churches to hold services on the theme of The Gospel According to Narnia.
Even the Methodists have written a special Narnia-themed service

(snip)

US born-agains are using the movie. The Mission America Coalition is
"inviting church leaders around the country to consider the fantastic ministry
opportunity presented by the release of this film". The president's brother, Jeb
Bush, the governor of Florida, is organising a scheme for every child in his
state to read the book. Walden Media, co-producer of the movie, offers a
"17-week Narnia Bible study for children". The owner of Walden Media is both a
big Republican donor and a donor to the Florida governor's book promotion - a
neat synergy of politics, religion and product placement. It has aroused
protests from Americans United for Separation of Church and State, which
complains that "a governmental endorsement of the book's religious message is in
violation of the First Amendment to the US Constitution".

(snip)

Because here in Narnia is the perfect Republican, muscular Christianity for
America - that warped, distorted neo-fascist strain that thinks might is proof
of right. I once heard the famous preacher Norman Vincent Peale in New York
expound a sermon that reassured his wealthy congregation that they were made
rich by God because they deserved it. The godly will reap earthly reward because
God is on the side of the strong. This appears to be CS Lewis's view, too. In
the battle at the end of the film, visually a great epic treat, the child
crusaders are crowned kings and queens for no particular reason. Intellectually,
the poor do not inherit Lewis's earth.

(snip)

Children are supposed to fall in love with the hypnotic Aslan, though he is
not a character: he is pure, raw, awesome power. He is an emblem for everything
an atheist objects to in religion. His divine presence is a way to avoid humans
taking responsibility for everything here and now on earth, where no one is
watching, no one is guiding, no one is judging and there is no other place yet
to come.

Now keep in mind that C.S Lewis was an athiest up until he was converted by J.R.R Tolkien. It is said that Tolkien hated Narnia and called it, "one of the most ugly, poisonous things I have ever read".

As I said, I have yet to see this movie but I probably will. It looks as if it maybe a very well put together movie from a cinematic point of view. I wonder if people will be react to this movie the same way they did for The Passion of the Christ. Which I really didn't like and maybe I'll get into that in a later post.

Thou Shall Not Beat the Crap Out of People.

From Yahoo:

A college professor whose planned course on creationism and intelligent
design was canceled after he derided Christian conservatives said he was beaten
by two men along a rural road early Monday.

Mirecki planned to offer a spring course called "Special Topics in
Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies" after
the Kansas Board of Education decided to include more criticism of evolution in
science standards for elementary and secondary students.

Now we see how some so called Christians can be. So, you don't believe in Intelligent design. Let's beat it in to you. Feel the wrath of a merciful and loving God.

Now the guy did say some things that he shouldn't but isn't it the Christians that say forgive people not beat the crap out of them. Turn the other cheek or something?

What would Jesus do? He wouldn't have beat the crap out of the guy.

You know Christianity would not be so bad if it wasn't for the Christians.
